Billy Wilder's biography of pioneering aviator Charles Lindbergh paints a portrait of a brave, if remote, man. On the eve of his historic transatlantic flight, Lindbergh recalls how he earned his wings. His aeronautic experiences included being an Air Force pilot, a barnstormer and an air- mail carrier. These escapades helped transform him from a neophyte into an ace. It was his voyage from New York to Paris, however, that guaranteed his place in American history. Though he successfully completed his trip, Lindbergh had to remove ice from his plane and fight his own fatigue. He had no company on board aside from a stowaway fly with which he conversed. Lindbergh had no choice except to stay awake and alert, so he could reach his goal.
