A robust character actor disguised as an excellent leading man, Gene Hackman has given hardly a bad performance in more than 75 films. Whether in a vital starring role (The Conversation) or in an amusing cameo (Young Frankenstein), his performances are always spot-on. His Oscar win in 1971 for The French Connection gave him star status in many character-driven films. His second Oscar, which came 21 years later (a record number of years between acting awards) for Unforgiven, signaled a run of supporting duties in mainstream hits. He even put a string of action films together in his 50s. If any fault, he has never been given enough of a chance to show off the sparkling comic timing that shone in Superman II.
