incorporates poetry and philosophy into science.
Even though this book is completely of science one need not be steeped in knowledge or vocabulary of science to thoroughly become entranced in the writing of Lewis Thomas. A mellow feeling en- compassed me as I read this book. One becomes immersed in the essays. A fabulous read.

Exceptionally elegant musings on life
It's been over 15 years since I read this gem of a book but I've recommended it or have given it as a gift repeatedly over those years. It's too bad we no longer have Lewis Thomas to reflect back to us as we dive headlong into biological discoveries of undreamed consequence.

Excellent!
The essays contained in this book are wonderful. It may be a science book, but the writing is very poetic. Beautiful!

Stimulating Thoughts about biology and medicine
I enjoyed reading these short essays. Thomas has an endearing way of presenting little known facts and sharing unusual analogies that bring unusual insight into the behavior and society of humans and their diseases. This is no hum-drum collection of nearly identical articles, but a widely varied set of essays that incorporates good humor and generous praise of the wonderful world in which we live.
