Terry Brooks' Complete Bookshelf
With Reviews and Reader Comments

As a child in Sterling, Illinois, Terry Brooks didn't have a lot of toys, so he relied on his imagination to amuse himself. He concocted fantasy worlds populated by magical beings, creating whole landscapes to play in. Brooks still enjoys playing make-believe, only now he shares the products of his fertile imagination with millions of readers. In books such as First King of Shannara and Witches Brew, Brooks conjures heroes who use their wits and knowledge of magical arts to battle warlocks, sorcerers, and other evildoers who are intent on power and subjugation. Brooks ups the ante by giving his heroes problems and fears of their own to grapple with.

Terry Brooks always wanted to write, but knew it wasn't the easiest way to make a living. So after getting an undergraduate degree in English literature, he studied law at William and Mary College, passing the bar in 1969. He returned home to Sterling to practice and worked on his first novel at night. Retrieved from the slush pile by editor Lester del Rey, The Sword of Shannara was published in 1977. It was followed by seven more novels set in Shannara, as well as the Magic Kingdom of Landover series. In 1986, Brooks left his law practice to write full-time. He and his second wife, Judith Elaine Alba, divide their time between Seattle and Hawaii.
