Almost from its first broadcast in 1970, Monty Python's Flying Circus has been hailed as a classic of British comedy. Of course, for some the phrase itself is an oxymoron--and these books are obviously not their cup of tea. But for the legions of folks for whom Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Michael Palin, and the rest can do no wrong, All the Words are the equivalent of holy writ: the complete scripts for the BBC series created from 1970-74, before Python mania went worldwide.
Besides showing off the Pythons' enviable skill with the language (particularly Chapman and Cleese, who delighted in thesaurus-powered torrents of abuse), the scripts allow readers to see just how each episode hung together. Or not--often what little linking there was fell to the delightful animation of Terry Gilliam; the scripts often say "some Gilliam cartoons" and leave it at that.
Often the problem with printed scripts is that they pale in comparison to the visual version; that's not such a problem with these collections. Both volumes of All the Words merely stoke one's enthusiasm for the show; once you've seen an episode, you'll have no trouble conjuring it in your mind as you read. Students of sketch comedy need look no further to find out how it's done.
If you haven't yet memorized any of Monty Python's scripts, here's your chance. It's difficult to read this book without breaking into a broken English accent -- or at least without laughing aloud. Alarm luckless pedestrians as you gesticulate wildly with an halibut, learn how to determine whether a parrot is really dead or not...
"Nudge, nudge. Snap snap. Grin, grin, wink, wink, say no more".
