Beautiful, talented, and British, Vivien Leigh is
best known for portraying two of American literature's most famous
Southern belles--Scarlett O'Hara and Blanche DuBois. An unknown
in the U.S., she was famously plucked from obscurity by David
O. Selznick for the prime role of Scarlett in Gone with the Wind,
a role that won her the adulation of millions along with her first
Academy Award. Her off-screen life, though, was marred by tragedy
and tumult, as she suffered miscarriages, bouts with tuberculosis
and manic depression, and a stormy marriage to Laurence Olivier.
She captured a second Oscar for the film adaptation of A Streetcar
Named Desire and more than held her own against original Broadway
lead Marlon Brando. Bouts with both her physical and mental health,
though, left her drained, and she died in 1967 of tuberculosis.
