In the 1920s, the alchemy of cinema (and some carefully
planned publicity) transformed a poor Swedish girl into the most
enigmatic movie star of all. Greta
Garbo's film career began in Sweden, where she was the protégé
of director Mauritz Stiller. When Louis B. Mayer brought Stiller
to Hollywood in 1925, Greta Garbo came too, although Mayer had
no idea what to do with her. However, her first Hollywood movie,
The Torrent (1926), was a huge hit, and America fell in love with
this mysterious, distant actress, so different from the girl-next-door
Hollywood ideal. Her screen presence electrified even the most
contrived melodrama, and in her greatest roles she was utterly
captivating. Like all the best performers, she knew when to leave
them wanting more, and she made her final movie in 1941, ensuring
that her mystique would endure forever. Greta
Garbo films include
Queen Christina
Camille
Flesh and the Devil
Ninotchka
Anna Karenina
The Joyless Street
Anna Christie
Mata Hari
The Story of Gosta Berling
Grand Hotel
