The younger sister of producer-director Garry Marshall, Penny
Marshall brought her nasal whine to a full season of The Danny
Thomas Show in 1967 and then extended her television credits with
The Odd Couple and Happy Days. Brother Garry created the latter
as well as Penny's 1976-83 hit show, Laverne & Shirley. Her
TV image was largely that of a working girl, but behind the scenes
Marshall
directed several episodes of her series. In 1986 she got her feature-movie
break directing Jumping Jack Flash, and made magic with Tom Hanks
on Big. She balances a rare sensitivity with high entertainment
value, and between directing she delights audiences with cameos
