"Fasten your seatbelts--it's going to be a bumpy night." With that line, writer-director Joseph L. Mankiewicz (with a little help from Bette Davis) firmly secured his place in film history. Starting off as a producer and screenwriter in the '30s, Mankiewicz made his directorial debut in 1946, and just three years later won unprecedented back-to-back writing and directing Oscars for A Letter to Three Wives and All About Eve. Witty, literate, and always a field day for actors, Mankiewicz's films suffered sometimes from being overly talky, but who cared when the dialogue was so brilliant? Mankiewicz scored numerous hits in the '50s before being called in as a replacement for the 1963 Elizabeth Taylor epic Cleopatra. The Egyptian fiasco crippled his later career, though he bounced back with the clever thriller Sleuth in 1972.
