There may not be a more painful conundrum in Hollywood lore than
the career of Elia Kazan. A prodigious artist, Kazan
made an important contribution to modern theater in the 1940s
by mounting the original, historic productions of A Streetcar
Named Desire and Death of a Salesman on Broadway. After a period
of making sensitive, issues-oriented features and a couple of
smart thrillers, Kazan
redefined film acting by guiding epochal performances from James
Dean, Marlon Brando, and Montgomery Clift. But every one of these
achievements has been overshadowed by Kazan's controversial appearance
as a friendly witness before the House Un-American Activities
Committee in 1952. The director went on to make several landmark
works of elevated social consciousness, displaying his increasing
expertise of the visual possibilities of cinema.
