Born in Toronto, Norman Jewison learned the television trade in
Canada and England, then became a house director-producer on a
number of specials for CBS-TV in the late 1950s. He began directing
features in 1963, ranging from Doris Day romantic comedies to
satire (The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming), social
realism (The Cincinnati Kid), musicals (Fiddler on the Roof),
and science fiction (Rollerball). As with Sidney Lumet's work,
Jewison's
films often focus on abuse of power and the struggles of individuals
against organized authority (In the Heat of the Night). Yet some
of his most popular works (Moonstruck) point to the unabashed
entertainer in him.
